The ESOL/Bilingual Education program area will provide students with a thorough understanding of second language learning and teaching, bilingualism, and multiculturalism. The ESOL/Bilingual program area offers the following graduate degrees:
- Master of Arts in Education (MAE) in Curriculum and Instruction with ESOL Specialization The Master of Arts in Education (MAE) provides advanced graduate work in ESOL/Bilingual Education. Students can combine this MAE degree with a TESL Certificate for teaching adults (in collaboration with the UF Linguistics Program).
- Specialist (EdS) and Doctorate (EdD and PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction with ESOL specialization Students may earn a specialist or a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in ESOL/Bilingual Education. Students without previous course work related to K-12 ESOL are expected to complete the 18-credit sequence of core courses. Advanced graduate specialization seminars are offered annually by ESOL/Bilingual Education program faculty. Past seminars have included: L2 Literacy, Multilingual Issues From a Global Perspective, Language and Educational Issues in Migrant Populations, and Teacher Preparation and ELL Achievement.
Students enrolled in the graduate program develop their program of study in consultation with their advisor to individually tailor the program to their interests and needs. The following six core courses (18 credits) form the foundation of the graduate program (master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees) in ESOL/Bilingual Education.
- TSL 6245: Principles of Language for ESOL Teachers
- FLE 6167: Cross-Cultural Communication for Educators
- FLE 6165: Bilingual and Bicultural Education
- TSL 6145: Curriculum and Materials Development for ESOL K-12
- TSL 6373: Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language
- TSL 6440: ESOL Testing and Evaluation
Note the following two options for ESOL endorsement/certification:
- Teacher candidates who are already certified or earning initial certification in Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Special Education, and Foreign Language Education in Florida may apply directly to the Florida Department of Education for an ESOL endorsement. Additionally, teacher certification in ESOL may be obtained by taking the Florida Teacher Certification Exam in ESOL.
- Teacher candidates without initial Florida teacher certification in another field may obtain one of the advanced degrees (specified above) in Curriculum and Instruction and pursue ESOL teacher certification in Florida by taking the Florida Teacher Certification Exam in ESOL.
Students seeking admission to any graduate program must meet the requirements of the School of Teaching & Learning and of the University of Florida Graduate School.
