UF English Department Conference on Pedagogy and Film this week
The Graduate Film Studies Group, housed in the English Department, would like to invite interested undergraduate/graduate students and faculty to this year’s conference “Pedagogy 24 Frames Per Second: Film & Media in the Classroom.” The conference starts this Thursday, February 26th and goes until Saturday, February 28th in Pugh and Ustler Hall at UF. We have been lucky to schedule an amazing line-up of conference participants, keynote speakers, and filmmakers, including Phil Solomon, Francesco Casetti, and Lucy Fischer. We are particularly interested in encouraging students and researchers in the College of Education to attend, as we are excited to engage in an interdisciplinary dialog about the intersections of pedagogy and film.

University Women’s Club Scholars – deadline February 27th
Each spring, the University Women’s Club awards $1,000 scholarships to deserving students in honor of the wives of past presidents of the University of Florida as well as wives of distinguished campus leaders. Full time Juniors and Seniors with a minimum of a 3.6 GPA, and participation in campus and/or community activities are encouraged to apply. In addition, there are two awards specifically designated for undergraduate or graduate students with a disability that are presented from the Rita O’Connell Scholarship Foundation. Applications may be downloaded from the Dean of Students website at www.dso.ufl.edu/home/scholarships/uwc.

UF Master of Science – Dietetic Internship students need your help with a research project! All you have to do is complete a short online survey about food labels. The survey will take less than 10 minutes to complete. With your involvement, you are representing the college student population and helping us learn about the use and interpretation of food labels. Summer Research Course Announcement
EDF 6403 will be offered this summer. It is the six-credit required research course for all COE doctoral students. This is a great opportunity for doctoral students to focus the summer on research and on fulfilling all research course requirements. Two scholarships, each worth $1,500, will be awarded to students looking to gain perspective and experience to later take into the educational field. Talk and Book Signing with self-made business mogul Mike Fernandez
Join us on Tuesday, March 10, at 4:15 p.m. in the President’s Room at UF’s Emerson Alumni Hall for an inspirational and moving talk by billionaire entrepreneur Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez. He will talk on some of the formidable challenges he faced and life lessons he learned while figuring out the American dream and becoming a captain of the health care industry. He wrote about his experiences in his new book, Humbled By The Journey: Life Lessons For My Family…And Yours. This personal memoir explores Fernandez’s beginnings as a penniless Cuban immigrant and his transformation to a self-made business mogul. The presentation will be followed by a book signing. Each guest will receive a free copy of the book, compliments of the UF Alumni Association. Proceeds from the sale of his book go to The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, based in Miami. For more info, please email events@coe.ufl.edu

Environmental Education Workshop – Saturday, March 14th from 9am-3:30pm
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is partnering with Fire in Southern Ecosystems (FISE) to offer a workshop at the Austin Cary Forest Learning Center for undergraduate and graduate students and educators in the Gainesville area. Participants will receive FISE curriculum materials, become a certified PLT educator, and receive a PLT PreK-8 guide with 96 hands-on activities. Workshop fee: $5. 3rd Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference – Call For Papers – Submission Deadline March 15th
The Black Doctoral Network Conference Committee is inviting abstract submissions for the 2015 conference themed “Paying It Forward: Transforming Research into Practice.” The conference will be an interdisciplinary event that brings together academics and professionals from the social sciences, STEM, and humanities to address how we can positively impact and inform each other’s work and engage with our communities. Submission of abstracts from graduate and doctoral students, recent Ph.D. graduates and academic professionals across disciplines are welcome. Education Career Night – Wednesday April 8th
Teaching isn’t the only profession you’ll hear about if you attend UF’s College of Education Career Night on Wednesday, April 8th, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., in the Reitz Union Auditorium (open to everyone!) . A panel of four dynamic College of Education alumni will offer career advice and talk about the distinctly different career paths they each have followed—quite successfully—after earning their education degrees at UF. Following the Career Panel, UF’s award winning Career Resource Center is hosting “Careers in Education” Career Fair from 5 – 7:30 p.m. next door, in the Reitz Union Ballroom.

FREE GRE WORKSHOP – two workshops left!
The UF Teaching Center is offering a free workshop to help students prepare for the GRE exam. The four-night workshop will take place during the week of February 16-19; Verbal sessions will take place on Monday and Wednesday, (2/16 and 2/18), Math sessions on Tuesday and Thursday (2/17 and 2/19). Student Alliance of Graduate Students in Education (SAGE) is made up of masters and doctoral students across departments in the College of Education and provides opportunities to develop social and professional connections.

Interested in learning more about Peace Corps? 
On Thursday, February 19th at 4:00 p.m. there will be a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer panel in the International Center in HUB. Several returned volunteers from different sectors and regions will be available to share their experiences and answer questions you may have. Some highlights will be learning about why they joined, the cultural adaptation process, their primary and secondary projects, biggest challenges, host family living, how their service affected their career path, etc. It’s a really great opportunity to hear what Peace Corps service is like from a variety of perspectives.

The following week, Tuesday, February 24th, UF students will also have an amazing opportunity to talk live with a currently serving Peace Corps volunteer. He is a native of Gainesville and will be visiting family during his vacation. He has offered to come speak with interested students here on campus. We’ll be hosting a brown bag lunch session here in the International Center in HUB at noon. Students are invited to bring their lunch and hear a bit about Breton’s experience in Paraguay and ask their most burning questions. Are you an undergraduate student interested in doing funded educational research?
Apply for the University Scholars Program by Friday, February 20th! The College of Education has the opportunity to award 3 selected undergraduate students, who will be designated as University Scholars, the opportunity to work one-on-one with a chosen faculty member on a research/creative project of mutual interest. Students participating in this program will receive a $1,750 stipend to support research efforts under the faculty mentor.  This funded research will be conducted during the student’s junior or senior year.

In order to be eligible, students must have earned a 3.3 upper division GPA or a 3.0 GPA for a minimum of 75 credit hours of completed coursework. Additionally students must not graduate with their undergraduate degree before Spring 2016. If selected, students must attend a mandatory orientation session at the UF Undergraduate Research Symposium on Wednesday, March 18th. Florida Alternative Breaks – sign up by Friday, February 20th
Do you find yourself in college stressing out about money and wishing you had received more financial guidance growing up? Florida Alternative Breaks has your back on this one! Join us this spring break, to empower K-12 students to own their financial and economic success. In collaboration with Junior Achievement, we will be providing essential life skills to students in K-12 schools. Participants will act as facilitators in financial literacy workshops with Junior Achievement across the city. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive a financial literacy workshop themselves where they will learn about credit, taxes, budgeting, saving for personal goals, and other financial questions that come with being an adult. This is a great opportunity to gain classroom experience, mentor children, and provide students with skills that will help them become effective adults. Summer Workshop in Qualitative Methods – University of California, Berkeley
The Center for Ethnographic Research (CER) Workshop provides mentorship, hands-on research experience, and advanced training in designing and executing a project using qualitative methods for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. The CER Workshop will provide students with six weeks of intensive accelerated methodological training in the design and practice of qualitative methods in weekly seminars taught by CER graduate students. Join UF and International Student Volunteers in New Zealand During Summer of 2015!
Mark your calendars for Summer 2015! International Student Volunteers (ISV), a world-recognized and award-winning service organization named as one of the “Top Ten Volunteer Organizations” by the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, will pair with UF undergraduate students for the experience of a lifetime. Participate in a 2 week volunteer experience protecting New Zealand’s fragile ecosystems, and an optional 2 week adventure portion. The trip will be led by knowledgeable and responsible trip leaders who will work closely with in country staff to provide you a safe and rewarding experience. In addition, a UF PhD student will be in attendance as a University Leader to further provide context for learning and to serve as a touchstone to the UF community. College credit may also be available through independent study. We will be accepting only 12 participants, so apply ASAP! Upcoming High Honors Information Session – Monday, February 16th
Are you a College of Education undergraduate student interested in earning Magna Cum Laude (High Honors) status at graduation? The College of Education annually invites students to participate in the High Honors Program. Eligible students are those who complete the first semester of ProTeach with a 3.75 GPA and respond to the formal invitation. The Office of Student Services will be holding a High Honors Information Session on February 16th from 10:40 – 11:30 AM in the Terrace Room. Join us to learn more about the program, the thesis requirement, and have an opportunity to ask questions. Attendance is open to undergraduate students who have been invited to High Honors or are interested in doing High Honors in the future. FREE GRE WORKSHOP
The UF Teaching Center is offering a free workshop to help students prepare for the GRE exam. The four-night workshop will take place during the week of February 16-19; Verbal sessions will take place on  Monday and Wednesday, (2/16 and 1/18), and the Math sessions on Tuesday and Thursday (2/17 and 2/19). Student Alliance of Graduate Students in Education (SAGE) is made up of masters and doctoral students across departments in the College of Education and provides opportunities to develop social and professional connections.

Are you an undergraduate student interested in doing funded educational research?
Apply for the University Scholars Program by Friday, February 20th! The College of Education has the opportunity to award 3 selected undergraduate students, who will be designated as University Scholars, the opportunity to work one-on-one with a chosen faculty member on a research/creative project of mutual interest. Students participating in this program will receive a $1,750 stipend to support research efforts under the faculty mentor.  This funded research will be conducted during the student’s junior or senior year.

In order to be eligible, students must have earned a 3.3 upper division GPA or a 3.0 GPA for a minimum of 75 credit hours of completed coursework. Additionally students must not graduate with their undergraduate degree before Spring 2016. If selected, students must attend a mandatory orientation session at the UF Undergraduate Research Symposium on Wednesday, March 18th. Study abroad can be expensive with flight tickets and tuition. The College of Education wants to help make your plans of studying abroad affordable with the COE Study Abroad Scholarship. Two scholarships, each worth $1,500, will be awarded to students looking to gain perspective and experience to later take into the educational field. Applications are due by Friday, February 27th, 4pm. Please submit this application directly to scholarships@coe.ufl.edu.

University Women’s Club Scholars – deadline February 27th
Each spring, the University Women’s Club awards $1,000 scholarships to deserving students in honor of the wives of past presidents of the University of Florida as well as wives of distinguished campus leaders. Full time Juniors and Seniors with a minimum of a 3.6 GPA, and participation in campus and/or community activities are encouraged to apply. In addition, there are two awards specifically designated for undergraduate or graduate students with a disability that are presented from the Rita O’Connell Scholarship Foundation. 3rd Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference – Call For Papers – Submission Deadline March 15th
The Black Doctoral Network Conference Committee is inviting abstract submissions for the 2015 conference themed “Paying It Forward: Transforming Research into Practice.” The conference will be an interdisciplinary event that brings together academics and professionals from the social sciences, STEM, and humanities to address how we can positively impact and inform each other’s work and engage with our communities. Submission of abstracts from graduate and doctoral students, recent Ph.D. graduates and academic professionals across disciplines are welcome. Summer Workshop in Qualitative Methods – University of California, Berkeley
The Center for Ethnographic Research (CER) Workshop provides mentorship, hands-on research experience, and advanced training in designing and executing a project using qualitative methods for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. The CER Workshop will provide students with six weeks of intensive accelerated methodological training in the design and practice of qualitative methods in weekly seminars taught by CER graduate students. The UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes about 30 minutes.

This gives YOU the chance to develop an invaluable set of skills to help friends in distress and, quite possibly, to help prevent suicide.  U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) operates 191 schools, pre-K through 12th grade, in 12 foreign countries, 7 states, and 2 territories in the United States, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, Europe and the Pacific. FREE GRE WORKSHOP
The UF Teaching Center is offering a free workshop to help students prepare for the GRE exam. The four-night workshop will take place during the week of February 16-19; Verbal sessions will take place on  Monday and Wednesday, (2/16 and 1/18), and the Math sessions on Tuesday and Thursday (2/17 and 2/19). Volunteer at Williams Elementary School Carnival
The Williams Elementary School Carnival Committee is looking for volunteers to staff their Spring Carnival on Friday, March 13th! Duties would include staffing a game, passing out prizes, and having fun with local families. The carnival is from 4-7pm with volunteer shifts from 3:30-5:30pm or from 5:30-7:30pm. Groups welcomed! The UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes about 30 minutes.

This gives YOU the chance to develop an invaluable set of skills to help friends in distress and, quite possibly, to help prevent suicide. Happy Hour at local brewery First Magnitude Brewing Company on Thursday, February 19 starting at 5:30PM. First Magnitude typically has a food truck on-site or you can bring your own food. It’s also a family-friendly brewery (with a life-size Jenga set). Look for a RPCV sign when you arrive!

We will also be hosting a general meeting over dinner at Blue Agave on Thursday, March 19 from 6-8PM. Come for some fabulous food and stay to hear about other GRPCVA events and elections!
