The University of Florida Center for Autism and Related Disabilities is hosting a FREE online presentation this Friday (10/31) from 12-1pm about anxiety and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Isaac George Isaac, an Assistant Professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Florida, will present “Manifestations and Treatment of Anxiety in Individuals with ASD”. Course Offering in Paris
Are you looking for an interesting elective and a chance to study in Paris, France?  Dr. Sharon Austin will teach an African Americans in Paris course (POS 4956 or AFA 4905) for 2-3 credits in Paris, France during spring break 2015.  Students can earn 2 credits for the class if they do the assigned readings, short papers, and attend the class sessions and events in Paris.  They can earn 3 credits if they do these things and write an additional 8-12 page paper after we return to UF.  Before we leave for Paris, the class will have to watch online lectures and documentaries and write four 3-4 page papers.  In Paris, we will visit a number of historic sites of significance to African Americans such as the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, the Versailles Palace, the Montmartre district, the Latin Quarter, and others.  Students will also have a free day so that they can visit additional sites in Paris on their own or take a day trip to a nearby city.  The $2300 cost for undergraduates doesn’t include airfare, but does include lodging, some meals, transportation in Paris, and tickets to all of the site visits. Course Offerings
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is recruiting 120 freshmen, sophomores, and/or juniors to take a peer mentoring course in the spring (1 credit) and then work with us on a research project the following year (2015-2016) to help freshmen adopt healthful habits as they integrate onto campus.

We are also offering a new 3 credit course that will only be available to 35 sophomores.  In this course, students will help college freshman and high school students prevent obesity through a number of approaches including developing interactive, social marketing environmental intervention that will be implemented at UF during the fall 2015 semester.   Here is a short video regarding the opportunity http://goo.gl/1HIxNp. Davis Projects for Peace 2015
$10,000 grant for undergraduate students
Deadline: January 9, 2015

The University of Florida, a partner institution in the Davis United World College Scholars Program, is pleased to announce an opportunity for undergraduate students to design a grassroot project for peace anywhere in the world!  The Davis Foundation will award the winning project $10,000 for the project to be implemented during the summer of 2015.  Use your creativity to design a project that focuses on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding and breaking down barriers that cause conflict.  Due to this generous funding, UF students have had the opportunity to travel and perform service projects all over the world (Bolivia, Haiti, Rwanda, Mexico, Tanzania, Cambodia, India, Palestine, Swaziland, Macedonia, and Uganda).

Education Learning Partners needed for trip to Guatemala – February 28-March 7
Florida Alternative Breaks is a student-led service trip program, which takes students to many different locations across the U.S. and abroad to experience new communities, participate in service projects, and learn about a variety of different issue areas.

A Learning Partner is an integral member of the Alternative Breaks learning experience. Learning Partners are faculty, staff, and graduate students who participate as a team member of a Florida Alternative Breaks trip.

While Learning Partners are not responsible for the general planning of the trip, they do serve in a more hands-on role through expertise in the issue area of the trip or geographic location as well as guiding students during their reflection and personal development. Those selected to be Learning Partners are required to attend both FAB-wide events and trip-specific events, in addition to paying a small portion of the trip cost. Opportunities Overseas for Graduates

We pay for higher education and recognized all public school teaching experience to increase teacher’s pay grade. UF Volunteers Needed to Math Tutor for Underprivileged Teenage Girls
Growing up, many of the teenage girls here at our wonderful alternative school have either:  not been provided with the educational resources to help them succeed or been in such painful or challenging life circumstances that learning math concepts has taken a back burner.  As a UF student, you could really make a difference, explaining how to figure out middle and high school math problems (pre-algebra, algebra and geometry), and encouraging our girls’ determination.  The experience of seeing their light bulb go on about something that was previously confusing can be deeply rewarding.  Also, in addition to the intrinsic benefits, volunteering for the PACE Center for Believing in Girls, looks great on your resume!  Furthermore, there is books and internet resources here that can help you help them! If you are available to commit to focusing with our adolescents on 6-12 grade math material, volunteering on a consistent weekly schedule for a minimum of 3 hours a week – on Monday, Thursday and/or Friday between the hours of 9:45 am-4 pm.  For the first 5 people who contact us, we would pay for the $27 DJJ background screen required to be able to work to our vulnerable population.  Please respond to emi.lenes@pacecenter.org.

University of Florida faculty member looking for part time services in tutoring and child care for three children.

Child Demographics: 14 year old girl in 9th grade – help with organization, time management, and timeliness of turning in work; 11 year old girl in 6th grade – organization, time management, timeliness, reading and writing tutoring.  Has ADHD; 5 year old boy in kindergarten – general child care.

The middle child is the one who needs the principal tutoring services but there would be need for supervision of all three. The main hours I am looking for would be afternoons Monday – Thursday 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm roughly but these are negotiable. There would also be opportunities for some nights child care. My husband and I are looking for the right person to stay with our children, 2 boys ages 11 and 10 (6th grade and 4th grade), to assist with tutoring and monitoring of their virtual school experience at our home on Tuesdays/Wednesdays and Fridays; approximately 7 hours a day. I work but will be home with them on Mondays and Thursdays. Off Campus Ambassadors
Do you live off campus and want to be more involved? Would you like to be an advocate for the 39,000 students that also live off campus? Then you should become a member of the Off Campus Ambassadors. The OCA’s are a UF student organization sponsored by the Office of Off Campus Life.  OCA’s serve as ambassadors for the Off Campus Life office and assist with events, outreach, and helping students to discover fun things to do in Gainesville. Service-Learning Opportunity
Join Florida Alternative Breaks for an information session Monday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. in Little Hall room 0127. Learn specific details about trips, participant requirements and trip sign up. FAB offers unique experiences for students at the University of Florida to get involved with their global community. Students can travel to a location in Florida, the Southeast, or to select international locations. Each location focuses on a specific social issue ranging from children’s nutrition, criminal justice, refugee resettlement, to farmworkers rights.

Official trip sign up is at Issue Fair Thursday, Oct. 30 in the Reitz Breezeway from 6-8 p.m. Students will be able to meet site leaders from all of the trips, learn more about each destination, and pay their deposits for their trips to reserve a spot. Growing up, many of the teenage girls here at our wonderful alternative school have either:  not been provided with the educational resources to help them succeed or been in such painful or challenging life circumstances that learning math concepts has taken a back burner.  As a UF student, you could really make a difference, explaining how to figure out middle and high school math problems (pre-algebra, algebra and geometry), and encouraging our girls’ determination.  The experience of seeing their light bulb go on about something that was previously confusing can be deeply rewarding.  Also, in addition to the intrinsic benefits, volunteering for the PACE Center for Believing in Girls, looks great on your resume!  Furthermore, there is books and internet resources here that can help you help them! If you are available to commit to focusing with our adolescents on 6-12 grade math material, volunteering on a consistent weekly schedule for a minimum of 3 hours a week – on Monday, Thursday and/or Friday between the hours of 9:45 am-4 pm.  For the first 5 people who contact us, we would pay for the $27 DJJ background screen required to be able to work to our vulnerable population.  Please respond to emi.lenes@pacecenter.org.

UF Gator McKnights Unite invites you to attend Stages of Success: Knowing the Right Resources at the Right Time. LGBTQ Bullying Community Lecture
During childhood and adolescence, youth spend significant portions of their lives at school, but what if school is an uncomfortable space where they feel harassed or even bullied? Sadly, this is the reality too many LGBT youth face while in school. Join us October 21st as Dr. Elizabethe Payne hosts a discussion about the importance of restructuring school culture in order to address the issue of LGBT bullying. The event will begin at 6pm and will be hosted at Cymplify Central located at 5402 NW 8th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32605. Sponsored by UF LGBT Affairs and Gainesville Equality Youth.

Dr. Payne is a leading authority on the issues of LGBT bullying. Dr. Payne is Founder and Director of The Queering Education Research Institute (QuERI) currently located at Hunter College, CUNY, in New York City. Dr. Payne’s qualitative research with QuERI covers topics such as elementary teachers experiences working with transgender students, the effectiveness of LGBTQ professional training, and the role school structures play in LGBTQ student’s school experiences.

Dr. Payne’s work is unique in the field of educational research and is necessary in order to create positive school cultures that affirm LGBT youth identities.

We are volunteers of Alachua Children Literacy Project. We are organizing a food drive to benefit Hispanic, low income immigrant children in Alachua, FL.   • UF IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC–undergraduate students This 6-week, Study Abroad option includes the opportunity to teach in community learning centers in Santiago, Dominican Republic.  Students take 3 credit hours of either accelerated Spanish OR 3 credits of Cultura Dominicana (en espanol) PLUS 3 credits of EDG4930, Teaching in the Dominican Republic.  Students  live in homestays with families.  Contact Dr. Maria Coady (mcoady@coe.ufl.edu) for more information.
  • UF IN FINLAND**–graduate students – Ever wonder why the Finnish education system is considered to be “the best in the world?” Find out in Helsinki, Finland in a 2-week, 3 credit hour Study Abroad program, May 3-17, 2015. We believe that passionate individuals can inspire local and global change!  We, Projects for Haiti (P4H), are a Gainesville- based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to partner with Haitians educationally and vocationally while collaborating with the international community to advocate for global sustainable practices. We are thrilled to announce that on November 1, 2014 we will be bringing together over 100 Educators from around North Central Florida to host the First Annual Gainesville Connected Conference. In collaboration with the University of Florida Centers for Latin American, African, and European Studies, we hope to use the stories and passions of prominent international educational leaders to raise global awareness of global issues across world regions in our community.  This event will feature 5-6 dynamic speakers that will seek to inspire further international partnerships among educators and encourage global citizenry in North Central Florida classrooms. Davis Projects for Peace 2015
$10,000 grant for undergraduate students
Deadline: January 9th, 2015 

The University of Florida, a partner institution in the Davis United World College Scholars Program, is pleased to announce an opportunity for undergraduate students to design a grassroot project for peace anywhere in the world!  The Davis Foundation will award the winning project $10,000 for the project to be implemented during the summer of 2015.  Use your creativity to design a project that focuses on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding and breaking down barriers that cause conflict.  Due to this generous funding, UF students have had the opportunity to travel and perform service projects all over the world (Bolivia, Haiti, Rwanda, Mexico, Tanzania, Cambodia, India, Palestine, Swaziland, Macedonia, and Uganda).

Come out to our info session on Monday, October 20th from 5:30 – 7pm in the International Center at the Hub.  It will be an opportunity to find out how to apply and hear from last year’s project winners.

Site leading is an incredibly rewarding commitment. No leadership experience? Or maybe you’re a little rusty? We got you.  To become a site leader, you will be enrolled in a 2 credit course along with your co-site leader where you will receive a thorough training on leading through service-learning. You will get tons of support from the Exec Board as well as your site leader trainers. This course will also pay for your trip (except international trips). And let’s be real, site leading just takes FAB trips to a whole new level of fun and engagement. LGBTQ Bullying: Understanding the Importance of School Bullying
Please join Nationally Renowned Speaker on LGBTQ Bullying, Dr. Elizabeth Payne, on Tuesday, October 21st at Cymplify (Newberry Road and 8th Avenue) beginning at 6pm.

Dr. Payne is Founder and Director of QuERI. QuERI moved with Dr. Payne into the Hunter College LGBT Social Science & Policy Center at Roosevelt House. Prior to coming to Hunter College, she was part-time Associate Professor in the Syracuse University School of Education and in the LGBT Studies program from 2005-2014. As a sociologist of education, she specializes in qualitative research methodology, critical theory, youth culture, queer girlhoods, and LGBTQ issues in education. Her current research addresses LGBTQ bullying, explores education professionals’ experiences working with transgender elementary school students, the effectiveness of LGBTQ professional development for educators, heteronormativity in sex education curricula, and adolescent lesbian/queer girls’ experiences with the gender binary. Dr. Payne served on the New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Task Force, the DASA State Policy Group, and the New York State School Professional Certification Committee on Diversity. DASA is the New York State student anti-harassment law, which went into effect July, 2012. She was a high school English teacher in Houston, Texas before returning to graduate school.

UF Volunteers Needed to Math Tutor for Underprivileged Teenage Girls
Growing up, many of the teenage girls here at our wonderful alternative school have either:  not been provided with the educational resources to help them succeed or been in such painful or challenging life circumstances that learning math concepts has taken a back burner.  As a UF student, you could really make a difference, explaining how to figure out middle and high school math problems (pre-algebra, algebra and geometry), and encouraging our girls’ determination.  The experience of seeing their light bulb go on about something that was previously confusing can be deeply rewarding.  Also, in addition to the intrinsic benefits, volunteering for the PACE Center for Believing in Girls, looks great on your resume!  Furthermore, there is books and internet resources here that can help you help them! If you are available to commit to focusing with our adolescents on 6-12 grade math material, volunteering on a consistent weekly schedule for a minimum of 3 hours a week – on Monday, Thursday and/or Friday between the hours of 9:45 am-4 pm.  For the first 5 people who contact us, we would pay for the $27 DJJ background screen required to be able to work to our vulnerable population.  Please respond to emi.lenes@pacecenter.org.

Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies Presents – John Forster
The Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies (CEECS) invites you to join us for a presentation to be given by John Forster on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Norman Hall Terrace Room. John is the Chief Executive Officer of Noah’s Ark, located in Victoria, Australia. Part-time teaching opportunities at a local Charter School
A local charter school (boulwarecharter.com) is seeking students who are interested in getting experience working with elementary school children in a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment. We are looking for students to come teach Specials classes on either Mondays or Wednesdays from 9:45-2:45 with a 30 min break for lunch. Students will either lead arts/crafts or music (we have a piano) or another Special that they are qualified to teach. The pay is $15/hr. and the position will begin the week of Oct 6th and end the week of Dec 15th, with the possibility for renewal in the next term. Supplies are provided. All of our trips will give CoE students the chance to host educational activities with their participants on the social issue and also lead discussions on the issues in relation to their service.

No leadership experience? Or maybe you’re a little rusty? We got you.  To become a site leader, you will be enrolled in a 2 credit course along with your co-site leader where you will receive a thorough training on leading through service-learning. You will get tons of support from the Exec Board as well as your site leader trainers. This course will also pay for your trip (except international trips). And let’s be real, site leading just takes FAB trips to a whole new level of fun and engagement.  Projects for Haiti (P4H)
We believe that passionate individuals can inspire local and global change!  We, Projects for Haiti (P4H), are a Gainesville- based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to partner with Haitians educationally and vocationally while collaborating with the international community to advocate for global sustainable practices. We are thrilled to announce that on November 1st, 2014 we will be bringing together over 100 Educators from around North Central Florida to host the First Annual Gainesville Connected Conference. In collaboration with the University of Florida Centers for Latin American, African, and European Studies, we hope to use the stories and passions of prominent international educational leaders to raise global awareness of global issues across world regions in our community.  This event will feature 5-6 dynamic speakers that will seek to inspire further international partnerships among educators and encourage global citizenry in North Central Florida classrooms. UF Volunteers Needed to Math Tutor for Underprivileged Teenage Girls
Growing up, many of the teenage girls here at our wonderful alternative school have either:  not been provided with the educational resources to help them succeed or been in such painful or challenging life circumstances that learning math concepts has taken a back burner.  As a UF student, you could really make a difference, explaining how to figure out middle and high school math problems (pre-algebra, algebra and geometry), and encouraging our girls’ determination.  The experience of seeing their light bulb go on about something that was previously confusing can be deeply rewarding.  Also, in addition to the intrinsic benefits, volunteering for the PACE Center for Believing in Girls, looks great on your resume!  Furthermore, there is books and internet resources here that can help you help them! If you are available to commit to focusing with our adolescents on 6-12 grade math material, volunteering on a consistent weekly schedule for a minimum of 3 hours a week – on Monday, Thursday and/or Friday between the hours of 9:45 am-4 pm.  For the first 5 people who contact us, we would pay for the $27 DJJ background screen required to be able to work to our vulnerable population.  Please respond to emi.lenes@pacecenter.org.

Environmental Education Workshop Opportunity
Attached is a flyer with information regarding an upcoming Project Learning Tree workshop taking place on Oct 4, 2014 from 8:30-3:00 at Austin Cary Forest Learning Center in Gainesville. This is a great opportunity for any education, forestry, wildlife, agriculture, natural resource, or other student interested in learning how to teach youth about the environment. PLT provides formal, non-formal, and pre-service educators with the resources and curriculum to teach environmental education to youth through activities and lessons integrated through other subjects.  The workshop is only $5.
