TOYS FOR TOTS – Tuesday, December 23rd
This is just a reminder that this is the last push for the “Toys for Tots” holiday toy drive. To date, “we” have filled 9 boxes and collected $900 in monetary donations! We will be collecting new, unwrapped toys now through December 23rd. KIPP: Jacksonville Schools On Campus Tuesday, January 27th from 6-8 p.m.!
We are coming to you! This Information Session is for all potential teachers interested in working at KIPP Jacksonville Schools in the 2015-2016 school year. Come learn about our schools, how we’re putting students on a path to and through college, and get a sneak peek at our interview process before the Spring Careers in Education Fair! The Repurpose Project strives to reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, and rethink the way we use our products.  Our mission is to capture these overlooked treasures before they end up in the landfill and make them available to the public through our retail store.

Course Announcement: NEW Graduate Seminar in Meta-Analysis – EEX6936, Summer 2015
This course will provide (a) an overview of meta-­analysis in the identification of evidence-­based prevention and intervention practices, (b) practical, hands-­on training and experience conducting meta-­analytic analyses, and (c) an opportunity to conduct a meta-­analysis in the prevention and intervention science field. This course is open to any and all graduate students interested in prevention and intervention science. Please see flyer for specific course information.

Course Announcement in Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Spring 2015)
“Harry Potter and the Holocaust: Collective Memory and Alternative Ways of Talking about Racism and Genocide.” The course will be taught on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during 7th Period.

Course description: What is collective memory? And what is the difference between symbol, image, and icon? How do inadvertent visual descriptions compare to direct statements when it comes to speaking to children, adolescents, and even adults about the holocaust? The course will compare the treatment of the holocaust, racism and genocide in books such as Night, The Diary of Anne-Frank and Maus: A Survivor’s Tale with a more general discussion of violence and racism in books such as The Wave, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (as well as Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”) The main texts for this course will be two books out of the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows), a series which has been intended for children, and which makes almost no mention of historical events and identity while speaking of purity of blood, racial violence and (eventually) state-run racial persecution.

Course Announcement: Principles of Youth Mentoring- EDG 4930, Spring 2015
Principles of Youth Mentoring offers students an introduction to basic concepts in leadership, individual mentoring, and educational service. The course will focus on the development and understanding of the interactions of personal characteristics, skills, influence, commitment and goals necessary for student leadership and mentoring. The course also offers students the opportunity to mentor an at risk elementary or middle school student and foster leadership in a mentor setting. Students will use knowledge to plan and implement individual sessions and reflect on their learning. The course is structured with an online course component and two hours of mentoring per week at local schools. 2015 Big Idea Gator Business Plan Competition – Intent to compete is due December 15, 2014

If you have a business idea or have skills that can help other entrepreneurs, then enter the Big Idea Business Plan Competition for a chance to win up to $25,000 in prizes. Cool ideas are what start a business. Then it takes a business plan. Last year, aqUV, a water bottle with a purification system, won first place in our first ever Big Idea Competition. This year, it can be you!

This competition is open to all UF students, regardless of major or background. Simply submit the Intent to Compete form or the Join a Team form by December 15th. There will be a Business Plan Lab in the Spring that you can sit in on to help you through the business plan writing process. 1st place wins $25,000. 2nd place wins $10,000. 3rd place wins $5,000.

Micanopy Tutoring, one of the CAPP-sponsored programs, is looking for an afterschool Homework Helpers & Tutoring Program Coordinator.  Program hours are 2 – 7 pm  M, T, Th and F.  Wednesdays are 1 – 7 pm.  The coordinator would need to arrive at least an hour beforehand.  Pay is $15.00/hr.; the person would be working 31 – 35 hrs per week, so gross weekly pay would be in the $500 range.  They have around 35 elem, middle and high schoolers.  The kids are tutored by UF Work Study students and a solid base of community-based volunteers, although the coordinator will be expected to work directly with the kids when necessary.  This is a seriously good program that gets results. It occupies the 2nd floor of the Micanopy Library.

Part-time Nanny
After school 2-3 days per week. Duties include transportation from school to home or activities and homework help. Bright, cheerful, independent nine-year-old with mild special needs (walks using a walker). Must have reliable transportation. Larger vehicle preferred but not required. Kognito
As the semester comes to a close, with the stress of finals around the corner, the UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus.

UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center’s home page at www.counseling.ufl.edu where you can click on the “Kognito” logo, or at http://www.counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/kognito-for-students?mID=185. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes 30 minutes.

This gives YOU the chance to develop an invaluable set of skills to help friends in distress and, quite possibly, to help prevent suicide. 2015 Big Idea Gator Business Plan Competition

If you have a business idea or have skills that can help other entrepreneurs, then enter the Big Idea Business Plan Competition for a chance to win up to $25,000 in prizes. Cool ideas are what start a business. Then it takes a business plan. Last year, aqUV, a water bottle with a purification system, won first place in our first ever Big Idea Competition. This year, it can be you!

This competition is open to all UF students, regardless of major or background. Simply submit the Intent to Compete form or the Join a Team form by December 15th. There will be a Business Plan Lab in the Spring that you can sit in on to help you through the business plan writing process. 1st place wins $25,000. 2nd place wins $10,000. 3rd place wins $5,000.

Course Announcement in Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Spring 2015)
“Harry Potter and the Holocaust: Collective Memory and Alternative Ways of Talking about Racism and Genocide.” The course will be taught on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during 7th Period.

Course description: What is collective memory? And what is the difference between symbol, image, and icon? How do inadvertent visual descriptions compare to direct statements when it comes to speaking to children, adolescents, and even adults about the holocaust? The course will compare the treatment of the holocaust, racism and genocide in books such as Night, The Diary of Anne-Frank and Maus: A Survivor’s Tale with a more general discussion of violence and racism in books such as The Wave, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (as well as Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”) The main texts for this course will be two books out of the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows), a series which has been intended for children, and which makes almost no mention of historical events and identity while speaking of purity of blood, racial violence and (eventually) state-run racial persecution.

Course Announcement: Principles of Youth Mentoring- EDG 4930, Spring 2015
Principles of Youth Mentoring offers students an introduction to basic concepts in leadership, individual mentoring, and educational service. The course will focus on the development and understanding of the interactions of personal characteristics, skills, influence, commitment and goals necessary for student leadership and mentoring. The course also offers students the opportunity to mentor an at risk elementary or middle school student and foster leadership in a mentor setting. Students will use knowledge to plan and implement individual sessions and reflect on their learning. The course is structured with an online course component and two hours of mentoring per week at local schools. The US Teaching Assistantship Program in Austria is now accepting applications for its 2015-2016 program, which since 1962 has provided American college and university graduates with opportunities to work at secondary schools throughout Austria as teaching assistants. Financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Women’s Affairs (BMBF) and administered by the Austrian-American Educational Commission, this program enables American teaching assistants not only to enhance instruction in English as native speakers, but also to serve as important resources for first-hand information about the United States and the American way of life. Babysitting/ Nanny/ Tutoring

Micanopy Tutoring, one of the CAPP-sponsored programs, is looking for an afterschool Homework Helpers & Tutoring Program Coordinator.  Program hours are 2 – 7 pm  M, T, Th and F.  Wednesdays are 1 – 7 pm.  The coordinator would need to arrive at least an hour beforehand.  Pay is $15.00/hr.; the person would be working 31 – 35 hrs per week, so gross weekly pay would be in the $500 range.  They have around 35 elem, middle and high schoolers.  The kids are tutored by UF Work Study students and a solid base of community-based volunteers, although the coordinator will be expected to work directly with the kids when necessary.  This is a seriously good program that gets results. It occupies the 2nd floor of the Micanopy Library.

Part-time Nanny
After school 2-3 days per week. Duties include transportation from school to home or activities and homework help. Bright, cheerful, independent nine-year-old with mild special needs (walks using a walker). Must have reliable transportation. Larger vehicle preferred but not required.
