ELEMENTARY, SITE, & SPECIAL ED FULL-TIME INTERNS — Wednesday, January 28th
If you are completing your full-time internship this SPRING as an Elementary, SITE, or Special Ed intern, plan to attend the Professional Orientation Seminar on Wednesday, January 28th at the Kirby Smith Board Room. The session will be from 1:30-3:00pm. Two local principals will share information about interviewing and expectations of first-year teachers. Questions will also be answered about certification. IMPACT Info Session – Tonight, Wed, Jan 28th from 7-8pm in Matherly 51

Spring 2015 Degree Application — Friday, January 30th @ 5pm
If you will be completing your degree requirements in Spring 2015, applications for award of the degree are being accepted through ONE.UF under the My Record menu> degree application from the ISIS left menu. The application deadline is January 30th by 5:00pm. Education minors and undergraduate students can stop by the Office of Student Services to complete a graduation check before completing their degree applications. Let us make sure you are set to go! Graduation checks can also be completed by sending a request to studenthelp@coe.ufl.edu.

ECC will be hosting a fundraiser at Jason’s Deli THIS Friday, January 30th from 5-10PM. Please come out and enjoy a great meal in support of ECC! Our next workshop will be held February 18th in the Terrace Room at 7PM. We will be having teachers from Alachua County share with us how to prepare for the first week of school. Summer 2015 Study Abroad Deadline
Interested in studying abroad this summer? Depending on the length of the program, deadlines for application are due as early as Feb 13th. The UF International Center offers weekly information sessions and walk-in advising 9:35am-4:55pm every day. Also, there will be a Study Abroad Fair next Wednesday, Feb 4th from 10am-3pm on the Plaza of the Americas. Consider making your gator education a global one!

Is Study Abroad in your plans? Let the College of Education help!
Study abroad can be expensive with flight tickets and tuition. The College of Education wants to help make your plans of studying abroad affordable with the COE Study Abroad Scholarship. Two scholarships, each worth $1,500, will be awarded to students looking to gain perspective and experience to later take into the educational field. Applications are due by Friday, February 27, 4pm. Happy Hour at local brewery First Magnitude Brewing Company on Thursday, February 19 starting at 5:30PM. First Magnitude typically has a food truck on-site or you can bring your own food. It’s also a family-friendly brewery (with a life-size Jenga set). Look for a RPCV sign when you arrive!

UF’s America Reads program is currently hiring tutors for the Spring 2015 semester. America Reads is a Federal Work Study program that provides literacy tutoring to at-risk students in the Gainesville community. Paid positions are available for students enrolled at the University of Florida who are eligible to receive Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. Tutors must be available at least 2 days per week and for at least six hours per week. Applications can be found on the America Reads website at https://education.ufl.edu/america-reads/. Kappa Delta Pi (KDPi) – Deadline TODAY, January 21st @ 5pm
Interested in joining one of the Top 10 Honor Societies at the University of Florida? Apply today to be a part of UF’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (KDPi), an international honor society for education majors and pre-service teachers. To be eligible to apply for KDPi you must be a sophomore or higher, have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, have 12 hours in the College of Education completed or currently in progress, and complete the application and recommendation form. SPPS Training Series
The UF Center for Digital Health and Wellness is hosting a Statistical Analysis Software Training Series in the Florida Gym, Room 250. The series will consist of four (4) 3-hour workshops. Please plan to commit to all four (4) sessions as each lesson and in-class project will build on the previous session. Click here for more information or to register. Words on Canvas – the Harn Museum’s Writing Competition
The second edition of Words on Canvas, the Harn Museum’s writing competition, is open for submissions! Within every work of art is a story, a life and a spark of inspiration—what will you find?

We’re looking for your art-inspired writing based on a wide selection of works from the Harn’s collections. All UF and Santa Fe students are welcome to submit by the deadline of February 15th. Prose submissions should be under 1,000 words long and poetry should be limited to 30 lines. Entry is simple and free of charge.

This is a great opportunity for our employers to learn about an array of college recruiting topics from establishing internship programs to connecting with experienced Gators. The webinars are one hour online presentations that allow employers to engage with CRC staff and increase the effectiveness of their recruitment strategy. KOGNITO
The UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center’s home page at www.counseling.ufl.edu where you can click on the “Kognito” logo, or at http://www.counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/kognito-for-students?mID=185. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes about 30 minutes.

2015 University Women’s Club Scholarships
The University Women’s Club awards scholarships each spring to undergraduate juniors and seniors. All of the monetary awards recognize scholarship, leadership, and service to the university and/or community. This year each award will be $1,000. NEED EXTRA MONEY – Data Collection Research Opportunity
Drs. Nicholas Gage and MacSuga-Gage are conducting research in two local elementary schools and are looking for data collectors. Specifically, three to four students are needed to conduct daily discrete observations using an electronic data collection system of teacher and student behaviors. Observations will occur in the mornings and last between 20-45 mins. All data collectors will receive extensive training prior to data collection. The positions are paid hourly at $12/hour. Would you like volunteer with international students? Volunteer with us as a Conversation Volunteer through the English Language Institute at UF. No foreign language experience is needed. The program is designed to help students practice English in a friendly setting while meeting Americans and making friends. Volunteers should plan on spending about an hour each week with their partner at a time and location of their mutual choosing. There will also be weekly Monday Mixers where Conversation Volunteers and students can meet and speak informally, and there will be opportunities to volunteer in Language Assistant classes with discussions and activities. Most of these students speak Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, or Portuguese.  We are looking for Spring volunteers. UF’s America Reads program is currently hiring tutors for the Spring 2015 semester. America Reads is a Federal Work Study program that provides literacy tutoring to at-risk students in the Gainesville community. Paid positions are available for students enrolled at the University of Florida who are eligible to receive Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. FluMist Clinic
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that the flu is severe this season. You may have read that the flu virus has mutated, so shots are less effective. But, it has been noted that the nasal spray vaccine, FluMist, should still be effective. Therefore, we have arranged for the administration of the nasal spray, FluMist, in Norman Hall Terrace Room (G400) on Tuesday, January 20th from 11:00am-2:00pm. There is no cost to you. Your health insurance company will be billed, therefore you must bring your health insurance information (company and policy number). SPPS Training Series
The UF Center for Digital Health and Wellness is hosting a Statistical Analysis Software Training Series in the Florida Gym, Room 250. The series will consist of four (4) 3-hour workshops. Please plan to commit to all four (4) sessions as each lesson and in-class project will build on the previous session. Click here for more information or to register. If you will be completing your degree requirements in Spring 2015, applications for award of the degree are being accepted through ISIS under the My Record menu> degree application from the ISIS left menu. The application deadline is January 30th by 5:00pm. Words on Canvas – the Harn Museum’s Writing Competition
The second edition of Words on Canvas, the Harn Museum’s writing competition, is open for submissions! Within every work of art is a story, a life and a spark of inspiration—what will you find?

We’re looking for your art-inspired writing based on a wide selection of works from the Harn’s collections. All UF and Santa Fe students are welcome to submit by the deadline of February 15th. Prose submissions should be under 1,000 words long and poetry should be limited to 30 lines. Entry is simple and free of charge.

The UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. On-Campus Transition Program Coordinator

LOCATION: University of North Florida Campus
JOB DESCRIPTION:  Assist OCT Program Director in managing the day-to-day transition services for young adults with intellectual disabilities in a post-secondary transition program. Investigate and implement strategies for OCT students to obtain experiential transitional services in an inclusive environment, implement strategies for students to increase their integration into the university community, oversee recruitment and train University of North Florida students to become mentors. Recruit and support university professors for students to audit courses, as well as act as a liaison regarding student progress. Coordinate events, trainings, and services for students and develop/manage students’ schedules. Conduct and complete student assessments, as well as, be a liaison to parents. Act as onsite supervisor for AmeriCorps members. Assist with the management and supervision of summer residential program.  Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: MA/MS in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education (concentration in Disability Services) or other related fields preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of behavior modification and counseling principles desired. Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Course Announcement: NEW Graduate Seminar in Meta-Analysis – EEX6936, Summer 2015
This course will provide (a) an overview of meta-­analysis in the identification of evidence-­based prevention and intervention practices, (b) practical, hands-­on training and experience conducting meta-­analytic analyses, and (c) an opportunity to conduct a meta-­analysis in the prevention and intervention science field. Course Announcement in Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Spring 2015)
“Harry Potter and the Holocaust: Collective Memory and Alternative Ways of Talking about Racism and Genocide.” The course will be taught on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during 7th Period.

Course description: What is collective memory? And what is the difference between symbol, image, and icon? How do inadvertent visual descriptions compare to direct statements when it comes to speaking to children, adolescents, and even adults about the holocaust? The course will compare the treatment of the holocaust, racism and genocide in books such as Night, The Diary of Anne-Frank and Maus: A Survivor’s Tale with a more general discussion of violence and racism in books such as The Wave, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (as well as Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”) The main texts for this course will be two books out of the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows), a series which has been intended for children, and which makes almost no mention of historical events and identity while speaking of purity of blood, racial violence and (eventually) state-run racial persecution.

Course Announcement: Principles of Youth Mentoring- EDG 4930, Spring 2015
Principles of Youth Mentoring offers students an introduction to basic concepts in leadership, individual mentoring, and educational service. The course will focus on the development and understanding of the interactions of personal characteristics, skills, influence, commitment and goals necessary for student leadership and mentoring. The course also offers students the opportunity to mentor an at risk elementary or middle school student and foster leadership in a mentor setting. Students will use knowledge to plan and implement individual sessions and reflect on their learning. The course is structured with an online course component and two hours of mentoring per week at local schools. Be a volunteer at KAMP’N in summer 2015—an overnight camp for children with autism and their families in the mountains of North Carolina. Dr. Jim Taylor, a graduate of the UF COE (Ph.D. in Special Education) is eager to have EduGators take part in this successful program. KAMPN’s LIFE (Live In Family Experience) will enable participating university students to “live-in” with the family. Cabins are designed to provide the students an opportunity as pre-service professionals to gain valuable experience to better prepare themselves for a career in human services upon graduation.

On-Campus Transition Program Coordinator

LOCATION: University of North Florida Campus
JOB DESCRIPTION:  Assist OCT Program Director in managing the day-to-day transition services for young adults with intellectual disabilities in a post-secondary transition program. Investigate and implement strategies for OCT students to obtain experiential transitional services in an inclusive environment, implement strategies for students to increase their integration into the university community, oversee recruitment and train University of North Florida students to become mentors. Recruit and support university professors for students to audit courses, as well as act as a liaison regarding student progress. Coordinate events, trainings, and services for students and develop/manage students’ schedules. Conduct and complete student assessments, as well as, be a liaison to parents. Act as onsite supervisor for AmeriCorps members. Assist with the management and supervision of summer residential program.  Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: MA/MS in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education (concentration in Disability Services) or other related fields preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of behavior modification and counseling principles desired. Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills including ability to multi-task. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher. Must have positive interpersonal skills, professional appearance and high energy.
