FREE GRE WORKSHOP – two workshops left!
The UF Teaching Center is offering a free workshop to help students prepare for the GRE exam. The four-night workshop will take place during the week of February 16-19; Verbal sessions will take place on Monday and Wednesday, (2/16 and 2/18), Math sessions on Tuesday and Thursday (2/17 and 2/19). SAGE Workshop: The Job Interview & Campus Visit – Thursday February, 19th at 11am in the Terrace Room

Student Alliance of Graduate Students in Education (SAGE) is made up of masters and doctoral students across departments in the College of Education and provides opportunities to develop social and professional connections.

Interested in learning more about Peace Corps? 
On Thursday, February 19th at 4:00 p.m. there will be a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer panel in the International Center in HUB. Several returned volunteers from different sectors and regions will be available to share their experiences and answer questions you may have. Some highlights will be learning about why they joined, the cultural adaptation process, their primary and secondary projects, biggest challenges, host family living, how their service affected their career path, etc. It’s a really great opportunity to hear what Peace Corps service is like from a variety of perspectives.

The following week, Tuesday, February 24^th, UF students will also have an amazing opportunity to talk live with a currently serving Peace Corps volunteer. He is a native of Gainesville and will be visiting family during his vacation. He has offered to come speak with interested students here on campus. We’ll be hosting a brown bag lunch session here in the International Center in HUB at noon. Students are invited to bring their lunch and hear a bit about Breton’s experience in Paraguay and ask their most burning questions. Are you an undergraduate student interested in doing funded educational research?
Apply for the University Scholars Program by Friday, February 20th! The College of Education has the opportunity to award 3 selected undergraduate students, who will be designated as University Scholars, the opportunity to work one-on-one with a chosen faculty member on a research/creative project of mutual interest. Students participating in this program will receive a $1,750 stipend to support research efforts under the faculty mentor.  This funded research will be conducted during the student’s junior or senior year.

In order to be eligible, students must have earned a 3.3 upper division GPA or a 3.0 GPA for a minimum of 75 credit hours of completed coursework. Additionally students must not graduate with their undergraduate degree before Spring 2016. Florida Alternative Breaks – sign up by Friday, February 20th
Do you find yourself in college stressing out about money and wishing you had received more financial guidance growing up? Florida Alternative Breaks has your back on this one! Join us this spring break, to empower K-12 students to own their financial and economic success. In collaboration with Junior Achievement, we will be providing essential life skills to students in K-12 schools. Participants will act as facilitators in financial literacy workshops with Junior Achievement across the city. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive a financial literacy workshop themselves where they will learn about credit, taxes, budgeting, saving for personal goals, and other financial questions that come with being an adult. This is a great opportunity to gain classroom experience, mentor children, and provide students with skills that will help them become effective adults. SG’s Women’s Affairs Event – Tuesday, February 24th
The Women’s Affairs Cabinet, the Women’s Health Care Center and GatorWell are hosting an event sure to benefit all women-identified people in attendance! The annual UF Safety Fair will take place by the Reitz Union (north lawn) on Wednesday, February 25th from 10am – 2pm. This event features interactive games, information, and materials, including GatorWell, victim services, rape crisis center, and Florida Safe Roadways. Study abroad can be expensive with flight tickets and tuition. The College of Education wants to help make your plans of studying abroad affordable with the COE Study Abroad Scholarship. Two scholarships, each worth $1,500, will be awarded to students looking to gain perspective and experience to later take into the educational field. Applications are due by Friday, February 27th, 4pm. Please submit this application directly to scholarships@coe.ufl.edu.

University Women’s Club Scholars – deadline February 27th
Each spring, the University Women’s Club awards $1,000 scholarships to deserving students in honor of the wives of past presidents of the University of Florida as well as wives of distinguished campus leaders. Full time Juniors and Seniors with a minimum of a 3.6 GPA, and participation in campus and/or community activities are encouraged to apply. In addition, there are two awards specifically designated for undergraduate or graduate students with a disability that are presented from the Rita O’Connell Scholarship Foundation. Talk and Book Signing with self-made business mogul Mike Fernandez
Join us on Tuesday, March 10, at 4:15 p.m. in the President’s Room at UF’s Emerson Alumni Hall for an inspirational and moving talk by billionaire entrepreneur Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez. He will talk on some of the formidable challenges he faced and life lessons he learned while figuring out the American dream and becoming a captain of the health care industry. He wrote about his experiences in his new book, Humbled By The Journey: Life Lessons For My Family…And Yours. This personal memoir explores Fernandez’s beginnings as a penniless Cuban immigrant and his transformation to a self-made business mogul. The presentation will be followed by a book signing. Each guest will receive a free copy of the book, compliments of the UF Alumni Association. Proceeds from the sale of his book go to The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, based in Miami. For more info, please email events@coe.ufl.edu

Environmental Education Workshop – Saturday, March 14th from 9am-3:30pm
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is partnering with Fire in Southern Ecosystems (FISE) to offer a workshop at the Austin Cary Forest Learning Center for undergraduate and graduate students and educators in the Gainesville area. Participants will receive FISE curriculum materials, become a certified PLT educator, and receive a PLT PreK-8 guide with 96 hands-on activities. Workshop fee: $5. 3rd Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference – Call For Papers – Submission Deadline March 15th
The Black Doctoral Network Conference Committee is inviting abstract submissions for the 2015 conference themed “Paying It Forward: Transforming Research into Practice.” The conference will be an interdisciplinary event that brings together academics and professionals from the social sciences, STEM, and humanities to address how we can positively impact and inform each other’s work and engage with our communities. Submission of abstracts from graduate and doctoral students, recent Ph.D. graduates and academic professionals across disciplines are welcome. Education Career Night – Wednesday April 8th
Teaching isn’t the only profession you’ll hear about if you attend UF’s College of Education Career Night on Wednesday, April 8th, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., in the Reitz Union Auditorium (open to everyone!) . A panel of four dynamic College of Education alumni will offer career advice and talk about the distinctly different career paths they each have followed—quite successfully—after earning their education degrees at UF. Following the Career Panel, UF’s award winning Career Resource Center is hosting “Careers in Education” Career Fair from 5 – 7:30 p.m. next door, in the Reitz Union Ballroom.

Summer Workshop in Qualitative Methods – University of California, Berkeley
The Center for Ethnographic Research (CER) Workshop provides mentorship, hands-on research experience, and advanced training in designing and executing a project using qualitative methods for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. The CER Workshop will provide students with six weeks of intensive accelerated methodological training in the design and practice of qualitative methods in weekly seminars taught by CER graduate students. Join UF and International Student Volunteers in New Zealand During Summer of 2015!
Mark your calendars for Summer 2015! International Student Volunteers (ISV), a world-recognized and award-winning service organization named as one of the “Top Ten Volunteer Organizations” by the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, will pair with UF undergraduate students for the experience of a lifetime. Participate in a 2 week volunteer experience protecting New Zealand’s fragile ecosystems, and an optional 2 week adventure portion. The trip will be led by knowledgeable and responsible trip leaders who will work closely with in country staff to provide you a safe and rewarding experience. In addition, a UF PhD student will be in attendance as a University Leader to further provide context for learning and to serve as a touchstone to the UF community. College credit may also be available through independent study. We will be accepting only 12 participants, so apply ASAP! Upcoming High Honors Information Session – Monday, February 16th
Are you a College of Education undergraduate student interested in earning Magna Cum Laude (High Honors) status at graduation? The College of Education annually invites students to participate in the High Honors Program. Eligible students are those who complete the first semester of ProTeach with a 3.75 GPA and respond to the formal invitation. The Office of Student Services will be holding a High Honors Information Session on February 16th from 10:40 – 11:30 AM in the Terrace Room. Join us to learn more about the program, the thesis requirement, and have an opportunity to ask questions. Attendance is open to undergraduate students who have been invited to High Honors or are interested in doing High Honors in the future. The UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes about 30 minutes.

This gives YOU the chance to develop an invaluable set of skills to help friends in distress and, quite possibly, to help prevent suicide. Happy Hour at local brewery First Magnitude Brewing Company on Thursday, February 19 starting at 5:30PM. First Magnitude typically has a food truck on-site or you can bring your own food. It’s also a family-friendly brewery (with a life-size Jenga set). Look for a RPCV sign when you arrive!

We will also be hosting a general meeting over dinner at Blue Agave on Thursday, March 19 from 6-8PM. Come for some fabulous food and stay to hear about other GRPCVA events and elections! Teach for DoDEA!
U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) operates 191 schools, pre-K through 12th grade, in 12 foreign countries, 7 states, and 2 territories in the United States, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, Europe and the Pacific. Becoming a teacher requires at least a bachelor’s degree, usually related to the subject in which one plans to teach. SPPS Training Series
The UF Center for Digital Health and Wellness is hosting a Statistical Analysis Software Training Series in the Florida Gym, Room 250. The series will consist of four (4) 3-hour workshops. Words on Canvas – the Harn Museum’s Writing Competition
The second edition of Words on Canvas, the Harn Museum’s writing competition, is open for submissions! Within every work of art is a story, a life and a spark of inspiration—what will you find?

We’re looking for your art-inspired writing based on a wide selection of works from the Harn’s collections. All UF and Santa Fe students are welcome to submit by the deadline of February 15th. Prose submissions should be under 1,000 words long and poetry should be limited to 30 lines. Entry is simple and free of charge.

The UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to friends about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. “Harry Potter and the Holocaust: Collective Memory and Alternative Ways of Talking about Racism and Genocide.” The course will be taught on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during 7^th Period.

Course description: What is collective memory? And what is the difference between symbol, image, and icon? How do inadvertent visual descriptions compare to direct statements when it comes to speaking to children, adolescents, and even adults about the holocaust? The course will compare the treatment of the holocaust, racism and genocide in books such as Night, The Diary of Anne-Frank and Maus: A Survivor’s Tale with a more general discussion of violence and racism in books such as The Wave, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (as well as Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”) The main texts for this course will be two books out of the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows), a series which has been intended for children, and which makes almost no mention of historical events and identity while speaking of purity of blood, racial violence and (eventually) state-run racial persecution.

Principles of Youth Mentoring offers students an introduction to basic concepts in leadership, individual mentoring, and educational service. The course also offers students the opportunity to mentor an at risk elementary or middle school student and foster leadership in a mentor setting. Cabins are designed to provide the students an opportunity as pre-service professionals to gain valuable experience to better prepare themselves for a career in human services upon graduation.

On-Campus Transition Program Coordinator

LOCATION: University of North Florida Campus
JOB DESCRIPTION:  Assist OCT Program Director in managing the day-to-day transition services for young adults with intellectual disabilities in a post-secondary transition program. Investigate and implement strategies for OCT students to obtain experiential transitional services in an inclusive environment, implement strategies for students to increase their integration into the university community, oversee recruitment and train University of North Florida students to become mentors. Recruit and support university professors for students to audit courses, as well as act as a liaison regarding student progress. Coordinate events, trainings, and services for students and develop/manage students’ schedules. Conduct and complete student assessments, as well as, be a liaison to parents. Act as onsite supervisor for AmeriCorps members. Assist with the management and supervision of summer residential program.  Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: MA/MS in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education (concentration in Disability Services) or other related fields preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of behavior modification and counseling principles desired. Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills including ability to multi-task. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher. Must have positive interpersonal skills, professional appearance and high energy.

2015 Big Idea Gator Business Plan Competition – Intent to compete is due December 15, 2014

If you have a business idea or have skills that can help other entrepreneurs, then enter the Big Idea Business Plan Competition for a chance to win up to $25,000 in prizes. Cool ideas are what start a business. Then it takes a business plan. Last year, aqUV, a water bottle with a purification system, won first place in our first ever Big Idea Competition. This year, it can be you!

Micanopy Tutoring, one of the CAPP-sponsored programs, is looking for an afterschool Homework Helpers & Tutoring Program Coordinator.  Program hours are 2 – 7 pm  M, T, Th and F.  Wednesdays are 1 – 7 pm.  The coordinator would need to arrive at least an hour beforehand.  Pay is $15.00/hr.; the person would be working 31 – 35 hrs per week, so gross weekly pay would be in the $500 range.  They have around 35 elem, middle and high schoolers.  The kids are tutored by UF Work Study students and a solid base of community-based volunteers, although the coordinator will be expected to work directly with the kids when necessary.  This is a seriously good program that gets results. It occupies the 2^nd floor of the Micanopy Library.

Part-time Nanny
After school 2-3 days per week. Duties include transportation from school to home or activities and homework help. Bright, cheerful, independent nine-year-old with mild special needs (walks using a walker). Must have reliable transportation. Larger vehicle preferred but not required.
