Several College of Education (COE) faculty have met to discuss collaborating on a submission to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Racial Equity in STEM Education funding opportunity. The Lastinger Center is interested in pursuing the opportunities discussed around investigating the fairness of assessments in virtual learning environments for mathematics and the data analytics conversation around exploring the characteristics of positive outliers among mathematics educators supporting Black and Latinx students.
In August, we will be in touch with the individuals who participated in those breakout groups to continue dialogue. Please let Phil Poekert (poekert@coe.ufl.edu) know if you were not in those groups but would be interested in exploring these possibilities further.
In other areas, we already have teams working around developing culturally responsive curricular materials for students and professional development materials for teachers in secondary mathematics. Please let Phil know if anyone would be interested in connecting with those teams.
Aside from that, we encourage our colleagues to continue dialogue around other areas of collaboration beyond the Lastinger Center’s work areas. Of note, our colleagues focusing on science education had an interesting discussion around supports for Black and Latinx students to develop positive identities as science learners. If you are interested in this line of inquiry and want to join a group of faculty conceptualizing this further, contact Ana Puig (anapuig@coe.ufl.edu).
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI) will propel biomedical research forward by adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and generating new “flagship” data sets and best practices for machine learning analysis. The Bridge2AI program will bring technological and biomedical experts together with social scientists and humanists to solve complex challenges.
UF Research is organizing a town hall on June 11 (Friday), 11:00am – 12:30pm to facilitate teaming on one or more data generation projects and to identify potential working groups around each module.

On May 28, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released President Biden’s fiscal year 2022 budget. The budget proposes historic increases in funding for R&D across a range of scientific agencies—including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Education (U.S. ED), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and others.
The president’s FY 2022 budget request to Congress includes $10.2 billion for the NSF; $102.8 billion for the U.S. ED, including $737 million for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES); $131.8 billion for the HHS; and $35.3 billion for the DOJ. Some key investment areas are as follows:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) in collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will offer an Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Education and Human Resources (IUSE: EHR) webinar focusing on opportunities for funding in the IUSE: EHR program, specifically associated with the new IUSE solicitation, NSF 21-579 due date July 21, 2021.

On May 10, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and Institute of Education Sciences (IES) staff convened the first public panel meeting to discuss the future of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). IES Director Mark Schneider shares some of the themes explored and invites you to attend the next panel. NASEM will solicit public comments at various times during their discovery and writing processes.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will convene an expert committee to discuss the Future of Education Research at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) on (a) critical problems where new research is needed; (b) new methods or approaches for conducting research; and (c) new types of research training investments.
The next meeting is open to the public. There may be an opportunity for formal public input as part of this meeting.

On May 25, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) released the latest results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) science assessment. IES Director Mark Schneider said that in the world of student performance as reflected in NAEP, “no change in scores” is about the best news there is. And so it is with the latest science results: little change overall, with students at the bottom of the score distribution falling even further behind.
The 2021 U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Symposium will connect government officials that drive the DoD’s AI/ML progress with innovators and leaders from industry, academia, and non-profit research institutions for presentations, discussions, and meetings.

As a reminder, the new NIH Biosketch and Other Support formats are changing. For deadlines on or after May 25, 2021, UF supports the use of the new Biosketch and Other Support forms.
UF Research Development (RD) is available to assist faculty in planning and coordinating large interdisciplinary research initiatives. There is no charge to departments or colleges for the services. Services include identifying appropriate collaborators, grant coordination, assistance with preparation of administrative (non-technical) sections of the proposal, review and editing, and graphics assistance. After initial contact to discuss grant coordination needs, RD staff will meet with the PI(s) to establish a grant writing timeline for submission and to develop a contract for service. Why is it important to distinguish between minor and major revisions? Question 3.0 on the Revision Smart Form asks teams whether the revision they are submitting is a minor revision or a major revision. Giving the best answer to this question is important because major revisions to studies that have been heard by the Full Board have to go back to the Full Board for approval.
Marking changes as minor when they are major causes delays in the review process. This extra time means your revision may not be eligible for review at the next Full Board meeting.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is targeting submission dates on or after January 25, 2022 for a new requirement that all Senior/Key Personnel on a grant application must enter a valid eRA Commons username (Commons ID) in the credential field. A valid eRA Commons username will be required to be entered in the “Credential, e.g. agency login” field for all Senior/Key Personnel listed on the Research & Related Senior/Key Person Profile (Expanded) form. Reminder: Use of Internet Explorer for eRA modules will be phased out by July 19, 2021. Please switch to other eRA supported browsers when using eRA modules.
To get applicants accustomed to this change, starting April 21, 2021, applicants will receive a warning if a valid eRA Commons username is not provided for senior/Key Personnel for submissions with due dates on or after May 25, 2021.

Nvidia, Research Computing, and the UF Informatics Institute are offering a Deep Learning Institute (DLI) workshop. Using the RAPIDS accelerated data science libraries, developers will apply a wide variety of GPU-accelerated machine learning algorithms.
