NSF and IES Release New Companion Guidelines on Replication and Reproducibility in Education Research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Institute for Education Sciences (IES) have jointly issued the Companion Guidelines on Replication and Reproducibility in Education Research (2018), a supplement to the 2013 Common Guidelines for Education Research and Development

The 2013 document Common Guidelines for Education Research and Development describes the six genres of NSF- and IES-funded research that generate evidence for strategies and interventions to increase student learning: foundational, early-stage or exploratory, design and development, efficacy, effectiveness, and scale-up.

The 2018 document Companion Guidelines on Replication and Reproducibility in Education Research focuses on the importance of replication and reproducibility of research and provides guidance on steps researchers can take to promote corroboration and build the evidence base.

NIH Issues Revised Grants Policy Statement for Fiscal Year 2019

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released a revised Grants Policy Statement that applies to all NIH grants and cooperative agreements with budget periods beginning on or after October 1, 2018.

This revised version does not introduce new policies, but it does incorporate all policy changes or updates made throughout the previous year and includes significant enhancements to improve the user interface, navigation, and search.

NSF Fastlane/Research.gov Login with GatorLink and InCommon Is Now Available

UF is now among the organizations whose members’ credentials can be used for logging on to https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov and https://research.gov.

Additionally, UF IT has recently enabled a new login feature for the Fastlane/Research.gov electronic systems. This new login feature—called InCommon—is now available for use for UF staff and faculty that have both GatorLink credentials and NSF Single Sign On credentials.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a revised version of the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG), (NSF 19-1). The new PAPPG will be effective for proposals submitted, or due, on or after January 28, 2019.

NCSER Announces 2019 Research Training Workshop: Getting SMART about Adaptive Interventions in Education

The National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) in the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), in conjunction with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, has announced a research training workshop on developing and evaluating adaptive interventions with a focus on sequential multiple assignment randomized trials (SMARTs).

IES Director Provides Update on the IES Version of LEED Standards

A while ago, I wrote to say that IES was working on developing research quality standards inspired by the famous LEED building standards. Our goal in developing these standards is to identify the domains and the core questions that, from the IES perspective, constitute the most important dimensions of high quality education research.

Paralleling LEED procedures, we intend to create tiers of excellence (Platinum, Gold, etc.). These award levels will be appearing on the What Works Clearinghouse. It is important to remember that these levels will be in addition to the evidence standards that make the WWC so crucially important.
